Julian Leeser MP – Speech in House of Representatives

For those who might have missed it, Julian Leeser MP delivered the following speech on parliament:

Mr LEESER (Berowra) (13:46): I recently spoke at the centenary of the Pennant Hills Golf Club. I raised the centenary flag and dedicated the centenary clock tower.

The golf club is something extraordinary. The clubhouse was opened in 1939 with socials and dances. Then war hit, and part of the clubhouse was requisitioned by the military. The club has endured wars, droughts and developments and changes in the community. It’s a club that produced Australia’s best amateur golfer, Tony Gresham. It’s endured because people believed in creating not only a course but a community and an oasis in an expanding city.

Almost a quarter of a century ago, Robert Putnam wrote his famous book Bowling Alone, which highlighted the decline in community organisations—people being too busy for community and too busy to volunteer. This club has defied that. Since 1923, the average length of club membership has been 25 years. There can’t be many institutions that can boast of such longevity among members. Some members have been there much longer, like John Duckworth a member for 75 years and Shirley Baker, a member for 70 years.

The centenary celebrations include the publication of the fourth history of the club by Joan Isles, a luncheon, a gala ball, official ceremonies and many rounds of golf. The club has a foundation and is planning further expansion by renovating its pro shop. I want to acknowledge the leadership of the club: President Michael Rowan; Vice President Suzanne Fabian; Captain Damian Maguire; Treasurer David Blackshaw, General Manager Barnaby Sumner; chair of the foundation Ross Jackson; Graeme Martin; Ray Dearlove and everyone involved in the centenary celebrations. Happy centenary.

Living History – Evolution of PHGC

Living History – Evolution of PHGC

The latest from Bruce Jones:

“Five years ago I made a video using aerial photographs and satellite images of the golf course which simply displayed the evolution of the course since 1943.

Recently Steve Townsend sent me an aerial of the course taken in 1930!!

I found this of great interest as it is the earliest aerial we have of the course…. 93 years ago and it shows the layout before the current 6th hole was build.

I also felt  that  ‘dynamic’ notes added to each new image would help identify  many of the changes that have occurred .

So here is an updated YouTube video of the Evolution of PHGC from 1930 to 2023.

Hopefully some members may find it of interest.”

Where was the first Bridge on the 9th located?

Where was the first Bridge on the 9th located?

A note from Bruce Jones (Living History):

I have long pondered trying to locate just where the bridge in the famous photo of E J Hyde and his son crossing at the 9th
in 1929 was, by trying to locate the distinctive rocks, with the tree growing between them.

For years vegetation blocked clear views of the face of the slope, but a photo taken several years ago revealed them.

The tree separating the rocks and tilting them upwards has died and the rocks are now horizontal.

But the distinctive step in the upper right rock, sitting into the lower one is the clear indicator.

Hence, the path from the tee was on the right hand side, down the slope and across the front of these rocks to the bridge
which was to the left looking back from the green.

The satellite photo helps give an indication of the likely path and bridge location.
