Celebrating the Launch of Stage 1

Celebrating the Launch of Stage 1

On Sunday, 6 July 2025, Pennant Hills Golf Club proudly celebrated a significant milestone in its ongoing course redevelopment project. With blue skies and high spirits, over 130 Members gathered to witness the official opening of Stage 1—a transformative chapter that sees the unveiling of the newly completed 9th, 17th and 18th holes.

The day began with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, where Members of our official party formally declared the new holes open. It was a moving moment, steeped in tradition and pride, with Life Members Steve Walker, Lucie Gabb and Darcy Cluff joining Club Captain Damian Maguire, Vice-President Sue Fabian, Women’s Captain Tina Skuodas, and Course Superintendent Michael Hedger at the ceremonial forefront. Their presence served as a powerful reminder of the stewardship and passion that have guided our Club through generations of progress.

Following the formalities, Members gathered at the new holes for an on-course exhibition and walkthrough, led by Neil Rolfe and supported by Jessica Noh, Jordie Garner and Andy Richards. This segment proved to be a highlight of the day, offering Members a firsthand understanding of the strategic nuances and playing characteristics of the new design. The professional team provided commentary on ideal lines of play, hazard management and how the revamped holes contribute to the broader course narrative.

With the ribbon officially cut and the golf exhibition concluded, Members returned to the Clubhouse for a carvery luncheon and a presentation from Michael Hedger, whose leadership throughout the redevelopment has been nothing short of outstanding. His presentation, paired with a visual walkthrough of the construction process and design evolution, gave Members a deeper appreciation for the immense planning, collaboration and effort that went into Stage 1. Key highlights from Michael’s presentation included:

  • The 9th Hole’s striking new rockery and water feature, designed not only for visual appeal but also to enhance challenge and course drainage.

  • The innovative 16A Practice Hole, giving Members a designated space to refine short game skills while mimicking real course conditions.

  • The reconfiguration of the 17th Hole, featuring a reshaped fairway bunker complex and refined green approach.

  • The 18th Hole, now featuring a repositioned Women’s Tee and a redesigned green catchment area—though not yet ready for full play, it offers a preview of the modernised finish that awaits.

After lunch, 56 Members took to the course for a 9-hole loop, playing the new holes for the very first time. Despite the 18th green still requiring a final grow-in, the experience was well received. The new layout was praised for its playability, aesthetic impact and clever integration into the existing landscape.

The day concluded in classic PHGC style—with refreshments, presentations, and plenty of laughter in the Clubhouse. Prizes were awarded, toasts made and a collective sense of pride filled the room. There was an unmistakable energy—one that recognised the significance of what had been achieved and the exciting future that lies ahead.

This event was about more than just opening holes—it was about connection, celebration, and momentum. And none of it would have been possible without the outstanding commitment of so many individuals and teams:

  • Michael Hedger, for his vision, tireless commitment, and steady leadership throughout the redevelopment

  • Bronwyn Steele, Neil Rolfe, and Nicole Tanner, whose dedication and planning brought the event to life

  • Our exceptional Course Staff, Pro Shop Team, Food & Beverage Crew, and Kitchen Team, all of whom worked behind the scenes to ensure a seamless and memorable day

  • And of course, our Members, whose ongoing support and engagement continue to drive this project forward

To those who joined us—thank you for being part of such a special occasion. To those yet to see the new holes, we encourage you to explore them in the coming weeks.

We are immensely proud of what we’ve accomplished, and even more excited about what’s still to come as we move into Stage 2.
